Newton County Academy’s basketball season came to an end last week as both teams lost their opening round games in the North AA Tournament.
The Generals lost 62-44 to Rossville while the Lady Generals lost 62-30 to Marvell Academy.

The Newton Lady Tigers completed another successful run through division competition last week by claiming the 6-2A Tournament title.
The Lady Tigers repeated as division champions as they beat Lake 63-43 on Thursday and beat Union 52-43 on Friday to claim the Division 6-2A championship.
After a rough start to the season, the Newton Lady Tigers completed an undefeated run through the Division 6-2A schedule to take the top spot in this week’s tournament.
The Lady Tigers beat Union 52-41 and needed overtime to beat Scott Central 49-47 on Tuesday.
As a sophomore, Union’s Michael Rush Jr. was forced into action on the offensive line.
Three years later, Rush is signing to play football at East Central Community College.
Union coach Brad Breland said he has seen Rush continually grow and get stronger through the years.
The Newton County Academy Lady Generals finished as the No. 3 seed in last week’s District 2-AA tournament.
The Lady Generals lost 46-40 to Hebron Christian and then beat Kemper Academy 54-32. The Generals lost 58-48 to Columbus Christian in overtime on Tuesday and then 43-39 to Hebron on Thursday.
The Newton County girls’ win streak came to an end last week but not before the Lady Cougars secured the regular-season Division 5-4A championship.
The Lady Cougars beat Quitman 63-49 on Tuesday to sew up the title and then lost 57-45 to Northeast Jones on Thursday in the regular-season finale.
Two more of Lake’s football players are moving on to play at the next level.
On Wednesday’s National Signing Day, Lake’s Danarrious Hughes and Zywon Ledbetter both signed with Holmes Community College.
Lake coach Tate Hanna said he thought both players made wise choices.
It was a rough end to the season for the Union basketball teams this week, losing three out of four contests.
The Lady Yellowjackets grabbed the only win of the week with a 50-45 win over Philadelphia. They finished the regular season with a 52-41 loss to Newton.
