Motorists will want to think twice before dumping their trash along county roads after the Newton County Board of Supervisors, in partnership with the Sheriff’s Department, are moving forward with plans to create a Solid Waste Officer position to help tackle the trash.

The Newton County Board of Supervisors held their recessed meeting on Jan. 16, 2020, at the Newton County Courthouse.
On the agenda for the meeting included:
• approval of mintues fromt he Jan. 6 meeting
• County Administrator
• Tax Assessor
• Executive Session on Personnel
While many, myself included, have hunkered down these past few weekends to avoid severe weather, our first responders have not.
It used to be a wood pulp building, then a fiberglass business, now the building at 330 Front Street is the new headquarters for Union Police Department, and Police Chief Billy Pat Walker couldn’t be happier.
“We’re in the new building and definitely proud to be here,” he said. “It’s something we’ve been working on for a while.”
After a week in office, newly elected District 31 Senator Tyler McCaughn, R-Newton, is already hard at work for the 2020 legislative session.
