UHS falls in key division gamesBy ROBBIE ROBERTSON,
With a team loaded with senior talent, it’s easy to understand Union coach Jacob Casey’s frustration.
Union lost two key division contests last week, falling 5-3 to Philadelphia on Monday and 12-1 to Lake on Wednesday. Union took a 25-0 win over Newton on Tuesday.
“If we are going to have any chance of winning the district, we will have to sweep out from here,” Casey said. “Right now, we have to find a way to get better and that’s the bottom line.”
Union falls to 9-8 and 3-2 in 4-2A play. Union will travel to Scott Central on Tuesday for a 4-2A contest and will host Philadelphia on Thursday. Union will then host defending 5A champion Neshoba Central on Friday.
Lake 12, Union 1
Lake took advantage of four errors by Union and broke open a close game with a pair of five-run innings to take a 12-1 over the Lady Yellowjackets in a Wednesday makeup game.
The game was scoreless after two innings before Lake broke through in the top of the third. JoJo McLemore reached on an error and scored on a triple by Taylor Duncan. She came home
when the Union defense booted a Laurel Breland grounder to give the Lady Hornets a 2-0 lead.
After a scoreless fourth inning, Duncan reached when she was hit by a pitch. That opened up the flood gates as five out of the next six batters reached base safely and the Lady Hornets scored five runs to take a 7-0 lead.
“We didn’t play good defense early and gave them momentum,” Casey said. “And once they got momentum, they started hitting the ball. We gave them the first couple of runs and got that momentum and we never really recovered.
The Lady Hornets added five more runs in the seventh and Union broke up the shutout with a run in the bottom of the seventh.
Union managed only four hits as Macy Lott was 2-for-3 and Mackenzie Dolan had a triple.
Anna Rigdon started for Union and was tagged with the loss, giving up nine runs on nine hits and two walks.
Philadelphia 5, Union 3
Philadelphia scored three runs in the third to take a two-run win over the Lady Jackets on Monday.
Each team scored two runs in the first inning before Philly plated three in the third.
Union had five hits in the contest as Lilly Burton had a single and drove in two runs. Anna Grace Blount had a single and scored while Anna Rigdon, Kayleigh Vance and Mackenzie Dolan each had singles.
Rigdon got the start in the circle and gave up five runs on 11 hits while striking out six.
Union 25, Newton 0
The Lady Yellowjackets had little trouble with Newton on Tuesday.
Union scored 15 in the first and five in the second and third innings.
Union had 13 hits in the contest as Mackenzie Dolan had a double and home run. Lilly Burton had two doubles.
Britli Cleveland got the win in the circle, pitching all three innings striking out six without giving up a hit.
