Tigers heat up on hardwoods


The Newton Tigers picked up three more wins on the hardwood this past week.

The Tigers had to come from behind to beat Lake 51-47 on Tuesday and then took a 47-40 win over Philadelphia on Friday night.

The Tigers then avenged a 20-point loss to Choctaw Central by beating the Warriors 52-38 on Saturday.

ECCC defeats Meridian for seventh straight Win

Freshman guard Roti Ware continued his hot play of late dropping in 31 points to lead the East Central Community College Warriors to their seventh straight win 89-77 over the Meridian Community College Eagles in a game played on the MCC campus Thursday, Jan. 11.

Fire engulfs Newton home


A home on Third Avenue in Newton was gutted by a fire this afternoon.

Firefighters from Newton, Decatur and Hickory responded to the blaze, which consumed the interior of a brick home that had a chimney.

There were no apparent injuries from the fire as of this afternoon. The cause is under investigation.
