Biewer Lumber opening new sawmill in Winona, creating 150 jobs

Biewer Lumber, headquartered in St. Clair, Mich., announced yesterday its plan to develop a state-of-the-art sawmill in Winona.

The mill, which is the company's second mill built in Mississippi, will be a $130 million investment and will bring more than 150 new jobs to Montgomery County.

DPS Most Wanted list proves successful with multiple captures in under a week

On January 8, the Department of Public Safety in coordination with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation released a Most Wanted List with 10 individuals who were of high priority to be detained in Mississippi.

Since releasing the list, five of those individuals have already been apprehended.

Three people have been charged with capital murder with armed robbery after a Newton man was found dead last week.

NMSD announces top teachers, administrator

One of the last agenda items of the meeting was the school calendar for January-May. Tentatively, students will be returning to school on Jan. 11. They will be doing in-person learning with one day of virtual learning.

NEWTON: Two more charged in November shooting

Two more people have been arrested in connection with a Nov. 12 shooting in Newton.

Newton Police Chief Randy Patrick said Rhyan Young, 25, of 600 W. Church St. in Newton and Derrick Glenn, 21, of 110 N. Pilate Ave. were arrested and charged with attempted murder. Both suspects have been released on $20,000 bond.

Man killed in fatal crash on Christmas

A man was killed early Christmas morning when his vehicle crashed off the side of Hwy. 80 just west of Newton.

Newton County Coroner Danny Shoemaker identified the victim as Jeffrey Alan Hunter, 50. The victim had a Meridian address on his license, but the Mississippi Highway Patrol identified the victim’s residence as Forest.
