Holiday events galore

Here is a listing of Christmas events going on in Newton County this week:

Newton Christmas Parade

Newton’s Annual Holiday Christmas Parade will be Thursday, December 5, at 6 p.m. The theme for this year’s parade is “The Magic of Christmas.” Register by calling the Newton Chamber of Commerce at 601-683-2201 or email director@newtonchamberms.com.

NCMHS Choir Concert

The Newton County Middle and High School Choirs invite you to their Christmas Concert on Thursday, December 5 at 6 p.m. in the NCHS Gym. Please bring a canned food item and support our local food pantries. The public is welcome.

Decatur Christmas Parade

The annual Decatur Christmas Parade will be Friday, December 6 at 6 p.m.. Lineup begins at 5 p.m. in the back parking lot behind Clarke-Venable Baptist Church.  The activities will begin at 5:30 pm with “Decatur Dollars Drawing” sponsored by The Greater Decatur Chamber of Commerce and Decatur merchants.  Immediately following the parade, East Central Community College will host “Warrior Wonderland.” Participants who would like to bring in the “Christmas Season” may be a part of this year’s parade by contacting Decatur City Hall at 601-635-2761 and arrive in the staging area at 5 p.m.

Decatur Women’s Progressive Club Christmas Wreath Raffle

Decatur Women’s Progressive Club will be hosting a Christmas Wreath Raffle, with the winner chosen at the Decatur Christmas Parade on December 6. Raffle chances are $1 each or six for $5. Get yours today from any Decatur Women’s Progressive Club member.

ECCC Warrior Wonderland

East Central Community College is excited to announce the 4th Warrior Wonderland scheduled Friday, Dec. 6, 2019, on the Decatur campus. New rides and games will highlight this year’s edition of this special celebration of Christmas, which will begin immediately following the Decatur Christmas Parade, about 6:30 p.m., and conclude by 8:30 p.m. Following the parade, activities will kick off with a fireworks display and visitors will have a variety of activities from which to choose. A $5 armband will provide unlimited access to a train ride, and five new rides and games including Human Foosball, Hippo Chow Down, Meltdown, Wrecking Ball and Mindwinder.

Whistlestop Marketplace

Come shop until you drop at our 10th Annual Whistlestop Marketplace on December 7 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Housed cozily inside the historic Newton Depot, we will have a variety of local vendors specializing in crafts, boutique clothes, baked good, jewelry, artwork, gift wrapping station, and more. Hickory Christmas Parade

The Hickory Christmas Parade will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in downtown Hickory. The parade route will go through the downtown square. Line up starts at 1 p.m. in front of the Chamber building. Contact Town Hall for any questions.

Union Christmas Parade

Hometown Christmas, a Union Chamber of Commerce Event, will feature the annual Union Christmas Parade at 6 p.m. followed by photos with Santa. Parade participants must register by Friday, December 6. Christmas Canon

The Christmas Canon will be presented at 7 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at the Roxy Theatre in Newton. Admission is free, but a canned food donation to benefit a local food bank is appreciated. It is a Christmas spectacular told through music! Fans of Trans-Siberian Orchestra will be delighted to hear some of their best loved Christmas songs, and everyone will love the traditional music performed with a brand new feel.

NUMC Drive-Through Nativity

Newton United Methodist Church will have its Drive-Through Live Nativity December 8 from 5:30 - 8:30 p.m. This year will mark 27 years since the first Nativity. There are 10 “scenes” from different periods surrounding the Christmas season, e.g. the Three Wise Men and King Herod, Mary and Joseph at the Inn, the manger scene, etc.
