2020 legislative session weekly updateBy SEN. TYLER MCCAUGHN,
As we completed the second week of session, the Senate approved House Bill 1 to correct an $18.4 million shortfall in the teacher pay bill of 2019 so Mississippi educators will continue to receive the $1,500 annual boost.
A clerical error by the Department of Education caused an undercount of personnel and the deficit.
However, officials said pay increases have gone to 40,991 education professionals since last year.
The house approved the deficit spending bill earlier in the session and we expect the governor will sign the bill in the coming days.
Committee meetings are ongoing for organizational purposes and as of Friday there were approximately 117 Senate bills already filed. Thank you for your continued support.
