1 dead in wreck on 494

One man is dead after a single car wreck on Highway 494 Tuesday.

Mississippi Highway Patrol reported Adrian Coleman, 49, of Meridian was traveling toward Union shortly after 1 p.m. when he lost control of his Toyota Sequoia rounding a curve. The vehicle left the road and struck a tree.









NCA athletes to honor veterans

The Newton County Academy Generals are inviting all former and current members of the armed services to come out Sept. 7 for the Generals Salute, a military appreciation game against Carroll County.

Ashley Bunyard, who organized the Generals Salute, said it will be an entire night dedicated to honoring veterans for their service.

Fire engulfs Newton home

A home on Third Avenue in Newton was gutted by a fire this afternoon.

Firefighters from Newton, Decatur and Hickory responded to the blaze, which consumed the interior of a brick home that had a chimney.

There were no apparent injuries from the fire as of this afternoon. The cause is under investigation.

Lake bound for state

Ironically, East Union may have given Lake the break it needed.

East Union knocked out Division 4-2A champion Philadelphia, a team that beat Lake twice in the regular season.



Four Newton County teenagers arrested in shooting, high-speed chase

Four Newton County teenagers are being held at the Lauderdale County Jail after being arrested after shooting at a Lauderdale County sheriff’s deputy and leading authorities on a high speed chase on Monday afternoon.

While no one was injured, shots were reportedly fired at a Lauderdale County deputy’s patrol car during the pursuit.
