City eyes new home for PD

Union Police Department is working to update their headquarters to bring the town’s law enforcement into the 21st century. In a Board of Aldermen meeting, Oct. 2, Police Chief Billy Pat Walker and Officer Steve Robinson spoke to Aldermen about the need for a new police station and possible funding for the project.





Tornadoes wipe out Tigers

The Philadelphia Tornadoes graduated 21 seniors from last year’s squad and after coach Bobby Hall resigned to start the year, the team seemed to be in turmoil.

But David Frye has righted the ship.

The Tornadoes scored the game’s first 40 points and cruised to a 40-8 win over the Tigers at E.L. Morgan Field on Friday night.

Bonnie White

Bonnie Dell White, 82, of Newton, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 26, at Lakeside Health and Rehabilitation Center in Quitman. She was born August 30, 1936 in Newton County.


Bonnie Taylor

Funeral Services for Ms. Bonnie Edwards Taylor, formerly of Union, were held Monday, Sept. 24, at 3 p.m. at Milling Funeral Home in Union.  Rev. Rusty Walton officiated with burial in the Union City Cemetery. 

Visitation was 1:30-3 p.m. prior to service at the funeral home.

Ms. Taylor, 88, died Friday, Sept. 21 in Madison, AL.



Polly Harvey

 

Polly Harvey, 84, of Union, went to Glory Land on Tuesday Sept. 25. She was born Thursday, July 19, 1934.

Visitation will be held on Friday, Sept. 28 from noon until 2 p.m. at the Morrison Heights Baptist Church in Clinton.

City mourns loss of Gordon

The City of Union suffered a huge loss this weekend as longtime Union Municipal Judge and Board of Aldermen Attorney Rex Gordon Jr., passed away suddenly late Saturday night.

Newton County coroner Danny Shoemaker said Gordon died of a cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead just before midnight at Laird Hospital in Union.


Vincent to lead state’s SBC

Clarke-Venable Baptist Church pastor Mark Vincent has been named the president of the Mississippi Baptist Convention.

Vincent, who has served at Clark-Venable since June 2004, said he wasn’t seeking the position, but after praying and thinking about the opportunity, he agreed to serve if he was elected.
