Hurst announces resignation

Mike Hurst, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Mississippi, announced Thursday that he has submitted his resignation to President Donald J. Trump and Acting Attorney General Jeffrey A. Rosen and will leave the Department of Justice on January 19, 2021.

Hurst, a native of Hickory, was appointed by Trump in June 2017.

Two teachers receive Golden Apples

Two teachers at Newton County Elementary School recently won the Golden Apple Award.

The Golden Apple is awarded each month to a teacher that works in Lauderdale, Neshoba, Kemper, Clark, Newton, Choctaw or Sumter. A teacher can be nominated to receive the award by someone they work with, someone in the community or a student.

NEWTON COUNTY: Supervisors eye emergency declaration

Due to the ice storms Newton County was impacted by, the Board of Supervisors meeting was moved from Feb. 18 to Feb. 22.

A large portion of the meeting was spent discussing the damage from the storm that needs to be fixed and how it will be taken care of.

All Mississippi Post Offices within the three-digit ZIP Code areas 369, 390, 391, 392, 393, 394, 395 and 396 have resumed normal operations. This includes retail service, mail delivery and drop shipments.
