Motorists will want to think twice before dumping their trash along county roads after the Newton County Board of Supervisors, in partnership with the Sheriff’s Department, are moving forward with plans to create a Solid Waste Officer position to help tackle the trash.

The Newton County Board of Supervisors held their recessed meeting on Jan. 16, 2020, at the Newton County Courthouse.

Students named to the 2019 fall semester honor roll, which includes those full-time students selected to the President’s List, Dean’s List and Honorable Mention List, have been announced at East Central Community College in Decatur.

ATLANTA – Chickasaw, Choctaw, and Oktibbeha counties are now eligible to apply for funding under FEMA’s Public Assistance Program to supplement state and local recovery efforts in areas that sustained damage from severe storms, straight-line winds, and flooding that occurred Oct. 26, 2019.
East Central Community College in Decatur is now accepting applications for the Slagle In-District Tuition Scholarship through June 30, 2020.
Newton County first responders rescued eight from flooded roads last week after heavy rain submerged more than a dozen county roads.
Emergency Management Director Brian Taylor said dispatchers answered three separate calls of trapped vehicles Thursday and Friday.
“We’ve had a couple vehicles in water,” he said.
