Superintendents happy with first-semester success

It’s no secret that since the beginning of March 2020, schools across the country have had to learn as they go when it comes to virtual learning. Many new procedures and protocols have had to be adopted in order to keep students and teachers safe during the pandemic. Schools in Newton County have also had to traverse down this unknown path.

UNION: Two facing charges following report

On Jan. 10, two men from Dallas, Texas. were arrested on drug charges at the Chevron gas station in Union.

Union Police Officer Mitch Kennedy said a local business owner notified the police of some allegedly suspicious activity going on. The two men were accused of looking in closed businesses in Union.

Board talks about tax billing concerns

Three Rivers Billing handles the solid waste bills the county sends out. The county tax collector May Bender has started handling the collections for those bills.

Parker honored for service

Deborah Parker celebrated her retirement with friends, family and coworkers at a surprise party thrown for her at the Newton County Courthouse.

Parker has been the comptroller for Newton County for 31 years. She said that being the comptroller entails several different things that she was tasked with taking care of.

County distributes $100k for new radios

At the Newton County Board of Supervisors Dec. 7 meeting, the board voted to allocate money to each fire department for the purchase of new radios and pagers. Each of the 10 fire departments received $10,000 to spend.

Students set to return to classroom on Jan. 11 after holidays

The Newton Municipal School District held their last board meeting of the year on Dec. 14.
One of the last agenda items of the meeting was the school calendar for January-May. Tentatively, students will be returning to school on Jan. 11. They will be doing in-person learning with one day of virtual learning.
