Ten candidates have qualified for the Newton Municipal School District Board of Aldermen upcoming November election, consisting of two candidates running for each of the five districts.
The list of qualifying candidates includes three incumbents that are serving on the current board.

District 1: Heidi E. Armstrong and Machell Walker Frazier.
District 2: Raymond Boutwell and Jhaddaka Leverette (Incumbent).
District 3: Christopher S. Meaders and Shannon Moore (Incumbent).
District 4: Monica Donald and Ryan J. Oakley.
District 5: Jo Beth Bounds and Arthur C. Nelson (Incumbent).
The process of lining up the 2024 NMSD Board Election has been a whirlwind of activity since Senate Bill 2232, a statute that converted the school board from being an assigned position to elected, passed, and was signed by the governor in May. After the Newton Board of Aldermen voted on August 6 to accept the proposed board district map, designed by East Central Planning and Development, it left potential candidates merely weeks to qualify by the August 30 deadline.
Registered voters who live in the Newton Municipal School District will elect the school board member within their district in the November 5 General Election. Registered voters within the district should be on the lookout for new Voter Registration Cards that include information on what school board district they live in.
