Two teams punch ticket to Jackson

Union and Newton's girls basketball teams will be headed to Jackson next Tuesday for the Class 2A Final Four.

This will be the first trip to the Final Four for Union, while Newton is headed back to the Final Four for the first time since they won the championship in 2019.

Lady ‘Jackets edge Bobcats, boys cruise to win

The Union basketball teams had an excellent showing the first round of the Class 2A playoffs on Monday.

The Lady Yellowjackets opened up with a 46-43 win over Bogue Chitto while the Yellowjackets pulls away in the second half to take a 53-35 win over Wesson.

Union girls basketball coach Matt Wilbanks thought this year’s team could be special.

In the end, the Lady Yellowjackets proved Wilbanks right.

After getting swept by Philadelphia in the regular season, Union got the last laugh as they took a 49-36 win to claim the Division 6-2A championship on Friday night at Scott Central.

UNION BASKETBALL: Girls beat Newton, boys dominate Philly

It was an up-and-down week for both Union basketball teams this week as they finished out the regular season.

The Union girls opened the week with a 56-53 loss to Philadelphia but closed out the week with a 41-34 win over regular-season division champion Newton on Friday night.

Three Yellowjackets sign scholarships

The Union Yellowjackets had three players sign to play college football last week.

Linebacker Peyton Posey and offensive lineman Jacob Moore signed to play with East Central Community College while wide receiver Jamarcus Jones signed with play with Gulf Coast Community College.

BASKETBALL: Yellowjackets come up with two big wins

The Union Yellowjackets started slow in both games last week but finished strong to pick up a pair of wins.

Union took a big division win at Philadelphia on Tuesday, beating the Tornadoes 50-47. They finished the week with a 48-34 win over Stringer on Thursday.
