Voters in Decatur and Newton returned to the polls on Tuesday, June 3, to decide four remaining aldermen positions and finalize their municipality leadership, while residents in Hickory voted to approve the legal sale of alcoholic beverages in the town.
Hickory
Hickory held a special election on the Legal Sale of Alcoholic Beverages last Tuesday, with voters being asked to vote for or against the sale of alcoholic beverages in the Town of Hickory.
After the polls closed at 7 p.m. and the votes were counted, it was determined that residents voted to approve the sale of alcoholic beverages in the Town of Hickory by a count of 37 votes, while 24 votes were against.
Decatur
The seat for Ward 1 Alderman was the lone position in the Town of Decatur with challengers, with incumbent Bill Johnston facing off against challenger Mac Chambers. After the dust settled on Tuesday, Johnston was able to retain his seat by receiving 39 votes, while Mac Chambers received 4 votes.
With Johnston’s win, the Town of Decatur’s Mayor and Board of Aldermen is set, and newly elected officials will be sworn in during a ceremony on Wednesday, June 25, at the town hall beginning at 4 p.m.
Newton
Up for grabs in the City of Newton Election were aldermen seats in Wards 1, 2, and 5. Ward 1 incumbent Michael Hillie survived a challenge from Arthur Nelson, winning 104-49.
David Pitts received 160 votes in the race for the Ward 2 seat, allowing him to defeat Kolby Tillman, who received 18 votes.
And in the Ward 5 race, Kay Killens won the seat by receiving 70 votes, while Charlene Walker received 23 votes and Eddie Pugh got 12.
A special called meeting of the City of Newton Board of Aldermen has been scheduled for Monday, June 30, at 5:30 p.m. at the Newton Depot to swear in the newly elected officials.
Union
The City of Union finalized the town’s leadership during the primary on April 1. Newly elected officials will be sworn in on Tuesday, July 1, at the town hall beginning at 5:30 p.m.
