All eyes will be set on the municipalities of Newton and Decatur on Tuesday, June 3, as their constituents will be tasked with electing representatives for their respected governments in the 2025 General Election.
Newton
With the mayoral and two alderman elections already settled, residents in Ward’s 1, 2, and 5 will head to the polls to elect their representatives for the board of aldermen on June 3.
Ward 1 incumbent Michael Hillie, who bested Maurice “Sapp” Milsap in the Democratic Primary, faces independent challenger Arthur Nelson Jr. in the General Election.
Mikah Kolby, the Democratic candidate, will face Independent David Pitts for the Ward 2 seat.
And after defeating incumbent Temeka Drummond in the Democratic Primary, Charlene B. Walker will face off against two independent challengers, Kay Killens and Eddie Pugh, for the Ward 5 seat.
The deadline for absentee voting for the General Election is Saturday, May 31. Newton City Hall will be open that day from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. to accept any last-minute absentee votes.
Election Day polling in Newton will take place at the Newton Depot, located at 128 S. Main Street, on Tuesday, June 3, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Decatur
The lone race in the Decatur General Election will be for the Ward 1 alderman seat, with incumbent Bill Johnston facing off against Mac Chambers.
With Austin Cunningham dropping out of the mayoral race in Decatur, that leaves Lea Ann Rushing running unopposed for the position.
Rushing is a recently retired Senior Master Sergeant of the Mississippi Air National Guard and is the wife of State Representative Randy Rushing.
The remaining four aldermen seats have been filled by candidates that are running unopposed: Luke Little in Ward 2, Mike Harris in Ward 3, Kay Chambers (recently appointed by the Board of Aldermen to fill in for her father, Danny Cherry, after his retirement) in Ward 4, and Lynn Hayes is running unopposed after opponent Todd Brown dropped out of the race.
