The 58th Annual Newton County Jr. Livestock 4-H/FFA Show and Sale brought together families, local businesses, and community members to raise approximately $36,000 through the sale of market animals and baked goods.
Held yearly, the show celebrates the hard work and dedication of young 4-H and FFA participants who spend the year raising and preparing livestock for competition. This year’s judge, Drew Wagner of West Texas University, presided over the livestock portion of the event.
• Grand Champion Market Hog: Madelyn Clark
• Reserve Grand Champion Market Hog: Anna Kate Westbrook
• Champion Market Steer: Russ Wagner
• Champion Market Haired Sheep: Malachi Harmon
• Champion Commercial Gilt: Jax Clark
• Champion Breeding Heifer: Abbey Breedlove, Union FFA
• Beef Showmanship (6-Year-Old Winner): Delaney Williams
The popular auction of market animals and baked goods was hosted by auctioneer Ted Hollingsworth. A standout this year in the baked goods category were homemade bread baskets from the Breedlove family of Union.
“The whole thing is successful because of the work that the families put into it and the support from the community and from local businesses,” said Shani Hay. “These kids work really hard on these animals all year long for this. There are no vacations from responsibility, and it teaches kids about work ethic and determination.”
The Newton County show is a precursor to larger events, including the Southwest District Show in Jackson and the Dixie National Jr. Roundup, where participants will compete at a higher level. The Dixie National marks the final of the livestock season before many participants transition to other 4-H activities, such as Shooting Sports.
