A couple Thursdays ago, fairly early, I looked out my kitchen window at a large tree in my backyard. I said, “Lord, if that tree were to fall into my kitchen, what should I do? Drop to the floor?” Then I forgot about it and continued to tidy the house, as my friends were scheduled to come at ten for our ladies’ Bible study.
After they came, we settled into the living room in the front of the house. As we continued our study–reading verses, sharing, praying–suddenly, we “heard” a loud “Crack!” as the very large oak tree at the end of my driveway fell to the ground! One lady saw it fall. Incredibly, it did not hit a house, a car, a mailbox, or even block the driveway or road in front of the house. We were just “blown away” by the tremendous size of that very old tree!
I remembered my “premonition” earlier that morning with the thought of a large tree falling on the property. I began remembering experiences my grandmother–my legal mother, as I was adopted–had had years ago. The first was when, at about four or five years old, I was with my daddy out in the “pump house,” which held the wringer washing machine, several feet from the house. Mama was inside the kitchen while Daddy and I washed clothes. He let me help him with washcloths that had been washed and rinsed. I placed each one on the wringer roll bar, which then squeezed water out of the cloth.
Mama always remembered the situation this way, “I just suddenly knew that Agnes was going to get her arm caught in the wringer! I rushed to go out, but stopped at the sink to get a glass of water to calm myself. Then I heard her scream!” My arm had indeed been caught in the wringer. Daddy quickly hit the release bar and got my arm out. We did not have a car at that time, but in God’s continued good timing, someone pulled into our driveway. The people in the car were relatives I did not know and had not seen before or since. They took us to the hospital, where my parents were told I had no injuries.
The other incident was many years later when, after Daddy passed away, Mama moved her house to her land across the road from us in Gautier, where we eventually lived 32 years raising our five children. One morning, my husband Royce and our older two children, Davy and Robin, were in the backyard. I asked them to watch Mary Kay (now Mary Kay Boudreaux, who lives next door to us here) for a bit, while I was inside the house. Mama told me she got the impression that the Lord told her, “Go get Mary Kay.” She quickly left her house, ran across the road directly to the back yard, where she found our little two-year-old, alone on the top steps leading into the tree house Royce had built for the children! Mama took her home with her!
Some may think of a “premonition” as a bad thing, possibly information coming from our enemy. But I remember the scripture, John 16:13, that says the Holy Spirit will tell us things to come. I find comfort in that, and treasure these memories.
By the way, I want to thank a crew, members of Clarke-Venable Baptist Church, who offered their services, brought heavy equipment and power saws the following Monday and worked several hours cutting up and moving as much of that enormous tree on my front lawn as possible! I am so thankful to them and to our good Lord!
