The Newton County Academy baseball team opened up the baseball season with loss on Saturday, falling 9-3 to the Meridian Homeschool Flyers.
Meridian scored one in the first and four in the second to lead 5-0. NCA scored one in the top of the fifth before Meridian answered with four in the bottom of the fifth to lead 9-1. NCA added two more runs on the top of the seventh for the final margin.
Meridian outhit NCA 5-4 in the contest. Logan Smith was 2-for-3 while Jax Porter singled and drove in two runs. Micah Garrison also singled for the Generals and had a stolen base.
The Generals used five pitchers in the contest and gave up only five hits but issued 11 walks. Jax Porter pitched the first inning and gave up four runs on five walks but struck out five. Leyton Porter pitched 1 2/3 of an inning gave up two hits and two walks Logan Smith pitched two innings and gave up two runs on two hits while Taylor Burt gave up two runs on three walks. Garrison pitched the last 1 1/3 of an inning and struck out three and gave up one hit.
NCA will return to action this week as they are scheduled to travel to Russell Christian on Tuesday.
