The high school baseball season got under way this past week.
Here’s a roundup of last week’s games:
Union
The Yellowjackets kicked off the season with two games this past week, winning both contests over Choctaw Central.
In the season opener, Union overcome a 3-2 deficit and scored four runs in the last two innings to take a 6-3 win. Union had eight hits as Sawyer Robinson was 2-for-4 with two RBIs while Turner Johnson doubled and Jackson Flake also had a triple. Kooper Fultz started on the mound and pitched five scoreless innings with five strikeouts. Zack Goforth pitched the next two innings and Tanner Watkins pitched the seventh to get the win.
On Friday, Union took advantage of seven walks and four errors to take a 14-4 win over Choctaw. Union trailed 4-3 before they scored 11 runs in the sixth to take the win. Union had nine hits as Watkins was 3-for-5 with two doubles and four RBIs. Flake was 2-for-4 with a double and also had four RBIs. Flake started and pitched one inning and gave up three runs on four walks while Watkins gave up one run on two hits in five innings.
Union will play Forest in a two-game, home-and-away series this week and then play at Clarkdale on Saturday.
Newton County
The Cougars got in one game last week and took an 11-1 win over Enterprise on Thursday.
County led 3-1 before exploding for eight runs in the fifth inning to win by the run rule. County had just five hits but took advantage of 10 walks. Grant Keith was the only multiple hitter, going 2-for-4 with a double while Landry Tolbird had three walks and two runs scored. Tolbird started on the mound and pitched three innings, giving up one hit while striking out eight. Braxton Dean pitched the last two innings and gave up one hit and strike out three.
County is scheduled to play at St. Andrew’s on Tuesday and at Mize on Friday before ending the week on Saturday by hosting Lake.
Lake
The Hornets opened the season with three wins, beating Quitman 9-0 in the opener on Tuesday, Sebastopol 11-5 on Saturday and Morton 13-1 on Saturday as well.
Against Quitman, the Hornets banged out 10 hits and drew nine walks, while allowing just three hits. Wes Nester was 2-for-4 with a double, home run and two runs scored. Austin Watson doubled and drove in two runs while Wyatt Bell was 2-for-3 with a double. Bell pitched the first five innings and gave up five runs hits and struck out 11 while Nester pitched the last two innings and struck out four.
On Saturday against Sebastopol, Lake scored five in the first and three in the third and fifth in a time-limit contest. Lake had eight hits, drew eight walks and took advantage of four errors. Brody Bufkin was 2-for-2 with three stolen bases and scored two runs. Andrew Posey started on the mound and pitched 4 1/3 innings and got the win, striking out seven while Bell got the last two outs.
In the second game of the day on Saturday, Lake scored nine runs in the last three innings to take the 12-run win. Lake had 10 hits, led by Nester who was 3-for-5 with two doubles and thre runs scored. Posey single and drove in three runs as well. Gavin Boles started on the mound and pitched five innings and scatter four hits and six walks while striking out six. Nester and Brayden Pitts each pitched one scoreless inning.
Lake was scheduled to host Forest on Monday, play at Lawrence County on Friday and play at Newton County on Saturday.
Sebastopol
The Bobcats split a pair of games to start the season, beating Forest 18-1 on Friday and losing 11-5 to Lake on Saturday.
Against Forest, Sebastopol used an 11-run second inning to cruise to the three-inning win. The Bobcats had just five hits but drew 14 walks. Ian Strickland was 3-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored and five RBIs. Lowry Moore also singled and had three RBIs while John Gatewood drew four walks. Colby Dooley pitched all three innings to get the win and gave up one hit and struck out five.
Against Lake, the Bobcats committed eight errors and walked eight batters. The Bobcats had seven hits as Dooley and Strickland each had a pair of hits. Gatewood also doubled and drove in two runs. Colby Gaddis started on the mound and pitched 2 1/3 innings and gave up eight run-on three hits while striking out five while Bryce Wooten pitched two innings and gave up three runs on one hit and five walks.
Sebastopol is scheduled to host Morton on Tuesday, Newton on Friday and Forest on Saturday.
Newton County Academy
The Generals held off Christ Covenant on Friday in a 7-6 win as coach Jody Kyzar’s return to NCA.
The game was scoreless through two innings before NCA scored four in the top of the third. The Warriors answered with one in the third and three in the fourth to tie the game. NCA then scored three in the fifth to lead 7-4 while Christ Covenant scored two in the seventh for the final margin. NCA only had four hits but drew four walks, had three reach on errors and had two hit batters. Cameron Evans doubled and scored while Taylor Burt singled, was hit twice and scored two runs. Max Ferguson singled and scored while Cooper Thrash singled and had an RBI. Carson McMillan started and pitched two innings, giving up one run on two hits and four walks while striking out three. Evans pitched the next two innings and got the win, giving up three unearned runs on two hits while striking out four. Campbell Tune pitched the last three innings and gave up two unearned runs on three hits to get the save.
NCA will host Central Hinds on Monday, play at rival Sylva Bay on Tuesday and be off until Saturday when they host Jackson Victors.
