The Newton County basketball teams split a pair of games to finish out the regular season last week.
The Lady Cougars took a 37-28 win over Northeast Lauderdale while the Cougars fell 64-54 to the Trojans.
The Newton County boys finished as the No. 5 seed and took on Leake Central on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Newton County girls finished as the No. 3 seed and will take on Leake Central at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
Northeast Lauderdale boys 64, County 54
The Trojans rallied from a first-period deficit and pulled away to take a 10-point win on Tuesday.
Newton County led 18-13 at the end of the first period before Northeast Lauderdale outscored the Cougars 17-10 in the second period to take a 30-28 lead at the half. Northeast then outscored County 22-14 in the third period to extend the lead to 52-42 going to the fourth. Each team scored 12 points in the fourth for the final margin.
Jaylen Torguson led Newton County with 17 points while Jaysi Torguson had 12 points. Dasan King and Keaton Gray each had nine points apiece.
County girls 37, Northeast Lauderdale 28
The Lady Cougars finished out the regular season with a nine-point win over the Lady Trojans.
Trinity Tubby led Newton County with 12 points while Dazlie Tubby and Shae Jimmie each had 10 points apiece. Ariel Hurst also chipped in five points.
