Any time Newton County and West Lauderdale get together to play a sporting event, it’s going to be competitive.
Newton County swept a pair of Division 4-4A games from their rivals from Collinsville. The Lady Cougars rallied and took a 51-34 win over the Lady Knights while the Cougars also rallied in the fourth to take a 64-53 victory.
Newton County will return to play today as they host Northeast Lauderdale on Monday and Leake Central on Friday in a pair of division games.
Newton County girls 51, West Lauderdale 34
The Lady Cougars trailed for most of the game but rallied in the fourth to take a 17-point win over the rival Lady Knights.
West Lauderdale led for most of the first half, outscoring Newton County 11-8 in the first period and 10-8 in the second to take a 21-16 lead at the half. County took the third period 10-9 to cut the lead to 30-26 before the Lady Cougars exploded by outscoring the Lady Knights 25-4 in the fourth to take the win.
Dazlie Tubby led Newton County with 25 points while Felisia King and Nalayah Phillips each had eight points. Shae Jimmie also chipped in six points with a pair of 3-pointers.
Newton County boys 64, West Lauderdale 53
The Cougars used a big fourth period to pull away and take an 11-point win over the Knights.
Each team scored 12 points in the first period while County outscored West 17-12 in the second to lead 29-24 at the half. West fought back and outscored County 19-13 in the third to take a 43-42 lead into the fourth. But County then outscored the Knights 22-10 in the fourth to pull away and take the win.
Keaton Gray led Newton County with 21 points while Dasan King had 17 points. Jaylen Torgusson had 13 points while Jaysi Torgusson had nine points.
