Both Newton County basketball teams saw their seasons come to an end this past week.
The Cougars opened the Class 4A playoff with an 84-79 win over Sumrall on Tuesday before losing 56-33 to Bay High on Saturday.
The Lady Cougars also opened the Class 4A playoffs with a 41-35 win over Columbia and then lost 43-33 to Pass Christian on Friday.
The Cougars finish the season with a 16-11 record while the Lady Cougars finish with a 17-12 record.
County boys 84, Sumrall 79
The Cougars controlled the first three periods but had to hold on in the fourth as they took a five-point win over the Bobcats on Tuesday.
Newton County led 21-19 at the end of the first and then outscored Sumrall 21-14 in the second to lead 42-33 at the half. County then pulled away and outscored Sumrall 21-12 in the third to lead 63-45 going to the fourth. Sumrall rallied and outscored County 34-21 in the fourth for the final margin.
Newton County put six players in double digits, led by Sebastian Johnson with 23 points. Dasan King had 13 point while Dre Jimmie had 12 points. Keaton Gray had 11 points while Roby Billy and Jalen Torguson added 10 points apiece.
County girls 41, Columbia 35
The Lady Cougars used a big third period to take a six-point over the Wildcats on Monday.
Columbia outscored County 8-7 in the first and 10-8 in the second to lead 18-15 at the half. But County then outscored Columbia 22-7 in the third to take a 37-25 lead into the fourth period. Columbia rallied and took the fourth period 10-4 for the final margin.
Felisia King led Newton County with 16 points while Dazlie Tubby had 12 points.
Bay High boys 56, Newton County 33
The Tigers finished each half strong and took a 23-point win over the Cougars on Saturday.
Newton County led 12-10 at the end of the first period before Bay outscored the Cougars 13-2 in the second to lead 23-14 at the half. Each team scored eight points in the third period while Bay finished by outscored Bay 25-11 in the fourth to take the win.
Dasan King led County with nine points while Roby Billy had seven points. Keaton Gray had six points while Sebastian Johnson added five points.
Pass Christian girls 43, Newton County 33
The Lady Cougars fell behind early and dropped a 10-point decision to the Lady Pirates on Friday night.
Pass Christian controlled the first half, outscoring County 10-4 in the first and 14-11 in the second to lead 24-15 at the half. Pass took the third period 8-6 while the Lady Cougars outscored the Lady Pirates 12-11 in fourth to take the win.
Felisia King led Newton County with 10 points while Kelcei Thomas had eight points. Dazlie Tubby had seven points while Shae Jimmie added six points.
