The Newton basketball teams continued to add to their win total over the Christmas break with a pair of wins.
Newton swept a pair of games from Kemper County and Forest. The Lady Tigers beat Kemper 54-30 and Forest 44-33.
The Tigers beat Kemper 71-49 and Forest 61-54.
Newton will return to play this week as they played at Scott Central on Tuesday and will travel to Bay Springs on Friday.
Newton girls 54, Kemper County 30
The Lady Tigers got a big game from Jamiya Jones and cruised to a 24-point win over the Lady Wildcats.
Newton shut out Kemper in the first period, leading 12-0 at the end of the first. Newton then outscored Kemper 17-10 in the second and led 29-10 at the half. Newton outscored Kemper 15-10 in the third and each team scored 10 points in the fourth period for the final margin.
Jamiya Jones led Newton with 27 points while Erin Ware had 15 points.
Newton boys 71, Kemper County 49
The Tigers used a steady supply of offense and took a 22-point win over the Wildcats.
Newton held a slim 13-11 lead at the end of the first and then outscored Kemper 17-10 in the second to lead 30-21 at the half. Newton continued to extend its lead in the second half as the Tigers outscored the Wildcats 22-15 in the third and 19-13 in the fourth.
Newton used a balanced scoring attack in the contest as De’Traun Brown had 12 points while Emmanuel Robinson and Tavion White each had 10 points apiece. Daylen Chapman had nine points while Omarion Milsap had eight points and Jacoby Jones added seven points.
Newton girls 44, Forest 33
The Lady Tigers use a big third period to pull away and beat the Lady Bearcats last week.
Forest led 12-11 at the end of the first while Newton took the second period 11-9 to lead 22-21 at the half. Newton then outscored Forest 16-7 in the third to lead 38-28 going into the fourth. Newton took the fourth period 6-5 for the final margin.
Jamiya Jones continued her strong play and led Newton with 24 points while Erin Ware had nine points. Sommer Jordan also chipped in eight points.
Newton boys 61, Forest 54
The Tigers pulled away in the fourth period and took a seven-point win over the Bearcats last week.
Newton led 15-14 at the end of the first and outscored Forest 19-13 in the second to lead 34-27 at the half. Forest then outscored Newton 20-13 in the third to tie the game at 47-47. Newton took control of the game in the fourth and outscored Forest 14-7 to take the win.
Tavion White led Newton with 20 points while Daylen Chapman had 10 points. Daylen Ware had nine points while Jacoby Jones had eight points.
