The Newton basketball teams finished the regular season on a strong note last week with a sweep of Nanih Waiya and Philadelphia.
The Lady Tigers beat Nanih Waiya 52-28 and then cruised past Philadelphia 59-32.
The Tigers were just as impressive as they beat Nanih Waiya 65-36 and then pounded Philadelphia 81-51.
The Newton boys are the No. 2 seed in this week’s Division 5-2A tournament at Lake. The Tigers will play Philadelphia on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. The championship game will be Friday at 8:30 p.m.
The Newton girls are the No. 3 seed and will play Lake on Thursday at 4 p.m. The girls’ championship game is Friday at 7 p.m.
Newton boys 65, Nanih Waiya 36
The Tigers pulled away in the middle two periods to take a 29-point win over the Warriors on Tuesday.
Craig Craft led a balanced scoring attack with 12 points while DeTraun Brown had 11 points. Tyreke Snow had 10 points while Tavion White added nine points.
Newton girls 52, Nanih Waiya 28
The Lady Tigers dominated the first period and cruised to a 24-point win over the Lady Warriors.
Erin Ware led Newton with 10 points while Sommer Jordan had nine points and Marianna Thames had seven points.
Newton boys 81, Philadelphia 51
The Tigers started fast in each half and took a 30-point win over the Tornadoes on Friday night.
Tyreke Snow led Newton with 22 points while Craig Craft had 19 points. Tavion White also had 18 points while Emmanuel Robinson chipped in eight points.
Newton girls 59, Philadelphia 32
The Lady Tigers jumped out early and cruised to a 27-point win over the Lady Tornadoes on Friday.
Erin Ware led Newton with 21 points while Sommer Jordan had 11 points and Jade Qualls added 10 points.
