The Newton basketball teams had a good, old-fashioned slugfest with Lake on Friday night.
The Lady Tigers rallied a six-point deficit on Friday to beat the defending Class 2A champions 33-29 while the Tigers pulled away from a scrappy Lake boys’ team to take a 61-52 win.
On Tuesday against Kemper County, the Lady Tigers fell to the Lady Wildcats 41-38 while the Tigers built an early lead and took a 61-48 win.
Newton played at Nanih Waiya on Tuesday and then will host Philadelphia on Friday to end the regular season.
Newton boys 61, Lake 52
The Tigers pulled away late to take a nine-point win over the Hornets on Friday night.
Newton jumped out to a 19-9 lead in the first period before Lake outscored the Tigers 13-2 in the second period, holding Newton without a field goal in the stanza, and led 22-21 at the half. Lake then built a lead as large as 7 points on their way to outscoring Newton 17-15 in the third and led 39-36 going to the fourth. But Newton then outscored Lake 25-13 in the fourth period to take the win, getting the lead for good with 1:02 remaining seconds and extending it for the final margin.
Tavion White led a balanced scoring attack for Newton with 17 points while Craig Craft had 16 points and Tyreke Snow had 15 points.
Curly Robinson led Lake with 18 points while O’Darius Johnson had 10 points and LeBron Jones chipped in seven points.
Newton girls 33, Lake 29
The Lady Tigers used a big fourth period to take a four-point win over the Hornets.
Lake led 9-5 at the end of the first and 17-14 at the half. Lake outscored Newton 8-5 in the third to take a 25-19 lead before the Lady Tigers outscored the Lady Hornets 14-4 in the fourth to take the win.
Erin Ware led Newton with 14 points while Janiah McDonald had six points.
Brooke Harris led Lake with 13 points while Laneisha Palm had 11 points.
Newton boys 61, Kemper County 48
The Tigers outscored the Wildcats in three of the four periods and took a 9-point win on Wednesday night.
Newton led 18-10 at the end of the first period while the Wildcats took the second period 18-14 to cut the lead to 32-28 going to the fourth. Newton then outscored Kemper 19-14 in the third and 10-6 in the fourth to take the win.
Tyreke Snow led Newton with 22 points while Tavion White had 15 points. Emmanuel Robinson had nine points and Craig Craft chipped in eight points.
Kemper County girls 41, Newton 38
The Lady Tigers weren’t able to hold onto a lead as the Lady Wildcats came back in the fourth to take a three-point lead.
Each team scored seven points in the first period while Newton outscored Kemper 12-9 in the second and led 19-16 at the half. Kemper outscored Newton 9-7 in the third to cut the lead to 26-25 going to the fourth. Kemper then outscored Newton 16-12 in the fourth to take the win.
Erin Ware led Newton with 22 points while Janiah McDonald had six points.
