The Newton Tigers are just one win away from another trip to the Big House.
The Tigers took two double-digit wins this past week, beating Wilkinson County 81-34 on Tuesday and North Forrest 67-44 on Saturday.
The Lady Tigers won 48-14 on Monday but lost 44-42 to Heidelberg on Friday to see their season come to an end.
The Newton boys will take on Bogue Chitto on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Holmes Community College. If they win, they will play at the Mississippi Coliseum at noon Tuesday against the winner of New Site-Northside.
NHS boys 67, N. Forrest 44
The Tigers used a stifling defense and jumped out to an early lead to take a 23-point win on Saturday.
Newton jumped out to a 23-13 lead in the first period and then outscored North Forest 17-8 in the second to lead 40-21 at the half. Newton extended the lead in the second half, outscoring North Forrest 14-9 to lead 54-30 going to the fourth. North Forrest took the fourth period 14-13 for the final margin.
Tavion White led Newton with 15 points while Daylen Ware had 14 points. Emmanuel Robinson had nine points while Jacoby Jones had eight points. Daylen Chapman had six points while LaRobert Wheaton, Jayden Tillman and De’Traun Brown had five points apiece.
NHS boys 81, Wilkinson Co. 34
The Tigers outscored the Wildcats in every period and rolled to a 47-point win on Tuesday.
Tavion White led Newton with 16 points while Emmanuel Robinson had 14 points. Chantrel Moore had 10 points while De’Traun Brown and Tony Jordan each had nine points apiece. Daylen Ware had seven points while Jy’marcus Holder had six points.
NHS girls 48, Amite County 14
The Lady Tigers dominated the first half and cruised to a 34-point win over the Lady Trojans on Monday.
Jamiya Jones led Newton with 15 points while Eunice Taylor had nine points. Erin Ware had eight points while Anniston Atkins had six points.
Heidelberg girls 44, NHS 42
The Lady Tigers had a 3-point shot to win the game at the buzzer but fell short as the Lady Oilers took a two-point win on Friday.
Heidelberg jumped out to a 13-6 lead in the first period but Newton outscored the Lady Oilers 18-8 in the second period and led 24-21 at the half. Heidelberg then outscored Newton 12-8 in the third period to retake the lead at 33-32 going to the fourth. The Lady Oilers took the fourth period 11-10 and held off the Lady Tigers to take the win.
Erin Ware led Newton with 16 points while Jamiya Jones had 12 points. Sommer Jordan and Sasha Harris each had five points apiece.
