Mrs. Bertiel McCoy Evans, a resident of Newton of over 70 years, will celebrate her 97th birthday on Thursday, March 16, 2023. The second daughter of the late Allen McCoy (a veteran of World War I) and Frances Armon McCoy, Bertiel was born on March 16, 1926, in Lena, MS, and was raised in Morton, MS with her sister, the late Martha Anna McCoy Dickson.
Mrs. Evans married the late Julius Terry (J.T.) Evans on August 14, 1949, and she moved to Newton, MS. Bertiel is a graduate of Davis Cosmetology School in Jackson, MS, and in the early 1950’s, she and her husband opened Evans Beauty Shop and Evans Dry Cleaners on Scanlon Street in downtown Newton, MS. For many years, the clack of her curling iron was accompanied by the sound of his pressing machine. Later she retired from the Conva-Rest Nursing Home after working there for several years. Mrs. Evans now enjoys spending her days reading her Bible, watching her favorite television shows, talking on the phone with family and friends, and visiting with her children and grandchildren.
Mrs. Evans has been an active member of the Macedonia Church of God in Christ, in Newton, MS, since the 1950’s. Her love for the Lord and her family is expressed to everyone and she fascinates anyone she encounters with the history of her years in Newton and her memories living on Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive (formerly Bell Street, and known as the “Keen End” in the early years).
Mrs. Evans is the mother of four children, John Allen Willis, Linda Rigsby, Sandra Gail Walker, and Frances Greer, the grandmother of six grandchildren, Erica Raquel Willis, Raphaela Walker Cockrell (husband Christopher), Julian Rigsby, Twana Rigsby, Bianca Greer and Coyvan Greer, and great-grandmother to Lauren Cockrell. She is the aunt of Michael Dickson (wife Barbara) and great-aunt to their children, Michael II, Marcus, and Leona Martha Dickson. She is also mother-in-law to Katie Willis, James Rigsby, Ronnie Walker, and the late Darryl Greer. All are grateful for her words of wisdom and daily prayers.
Mrs. Evans is a blessing to her family and friends, her community, and all who have known her throughout all of these years.
