Big G Grocery in Decatur recently marked a remarkable milestone—50 years of serving the community with dedication and hard work. The celebration brought together local officials, family members, and loyal customers, all gathered to honor the legacy of a business that has become more than just a grocery store—it has become a pillar of the community.
David and Patsy Griffin, along with their dedicated employees past and present, were recognized for their unwavering service to the town. Throughout the event, speakers highlighted the store’s impact, not only as a business but as a place where relationships have flourished and neighbors have supported one another. Congressman Michael Guest emphasized the store’s role in the town’s strength, saying, “This store is not just about business—it’s about community. It’s about people supporting each other, through good times and challenges.”
Among the many heartfelt moments was the recognition of the store’s resilience, particularly after the devastating fire in 1989. The Griffin family’s determination to rebuild and continue serving their customers demonstrated their steadfast commitment to Decatur and the surrounding areas. The ceremony also included proclamations Decatur Mayor Max Anderson, State Representative Randy Rushing, State Senator Tyler McCaughn, and Congressman Michael Guest, acknowledging the significance of the store’s contributions to Decatur, Newton County and the State of Mississippi.
From the start, the store was built on hard work, honesty, and a dedication to treating people right. David, who grew up in the grocery business, recalled carrying groceries for elderly customers and learning from his father about the importance of kindness and service. “I didn’t realize it at the time,” David reflected. “But he wasn’t just teaching me about the grocery business. He was teaching me about life—about how to love and serve people.”
Family and friends played a major role in organizing the celebration, and David expressed his deep gratitude for their efforts. He was visibly moved as he recognized those who had supported him and his family throughout the years, thanking his wife Patsy for her love and dedication in making the event possible.
As the celebration came to a close, David looked toward the future, expressing hope. “We’ve built something special here,” he said. “And I hope the next 50 years will be just as meaningful as the last.”
With laughter, shared memories, and a strong sense of togetherness, the gathering was a testament to what makes small-town businesses so vital. More than just a place to shop, Big G has been a cornerstone of Decatur. The celebration of 50 years was not just about honoring the past, but about looking ahead to a future filled with the same commitment, service, and love that has defined Big G from the very beginning.
