Robert Blount announced this week that he is a candidate for Mayor of the city of Union.
The election is scheduled for Tuesday, April 1.
In making his announcement, Blount said, "There is no way I can tell you how much ! love the city of Union and its people. I am both passionate and optimistic about our city and what it can be. This is home for Teresa and me and for our sons and their families.
"My goal is to make Union the very best that it can be. I have seen firsthand on many occasions how much we can achieve when we all work together. I want to work with Dr. Tyler Hansford and his staff at Union Public Schools in keeping it one of the best schools in the state of Mississippi. I desire to work with Ochsner-Laird Hospital, Family Medical Clinic, and Hometown Urgent Care as they continue to provide excellent health care for our community.
"I will work closely with our Chamber of Commerce and local businesses in seeking growth for our city. While the mayor is in charge of the day-to-day operations of the city, ! pledge to work hard with our city employees to see that they have the necessary training and equipment to continue to keep our city moving in the right direction."
Blount served on the Board of Aldermen from 1982-1986 and is currently serving as Alderman for Ward 2. He was a local business owner, a former volunteer fireman, and a 21-year member of the Union Lions Club. He served two terms as President of the Union Chamber of Commerce and twice as Country Day Chairman.
He served as a Board Director for East Central Community College for 10 years. He also served 39 years in the Mississippi National Guard. Blount retired from the Mississippi Counterdrug Task Force where he served as the State Substance Abuse Coordinator for the Mississippi Army and Air National Guard. He stated, "This job gave me the knowledge and experience to work with local law enforcement to combat the drug problems in our community.
"I am most encouraged to see so many young people getting more and more involved in our city, and I want to help in any way that I can to keep that trend moving forward."
Blount is a member of First Baptist Church of Union, where he currently serves as usher.
Blount stated, "I would be honored to serve as your next mayor. I am asking for your support and prayers in this campaign. I will make every effort to see as many citizens as possible and look forward to answering any questions that you might have about my vision and my hope for Union."
This is a paid political announcement.
