The Newton County School District is proud to announce a special opportunity to recognize and honor the brave men and women who left high school to serve our nation during World War II and the Korean Conflict. Through the State of Mississippi’s honorary diploma program, veterans who were scheduled to graduate between 1941 and 1955 may now receive the high school diploma they postponed in order to answer the call of duty.
Across our county and throughout our nation, young men and women made the extraordinary decision to place service above personal milestones. Many of these individuals never returned to complete their formal education because they chose to defend the freedoms we all enjoy today. This honorary diploma program is more than a certificate, it is a symbol of gratitude, respect, and recognition for sacrifices made during pivotal moments in history.
The Mississippi Department of Education, in partnership with local school districts, allows eligible veterans or their families to apply for an honorary high school diploma. In Newton County, we believe that recognition should be personal and meaningful. Therefore, our district is extending an invitation for all approved recipients to be honored publicly during the Newton County School District graduation ceremony. This moment will allow our students and community to stand together in appreciation of those whose courage paved the way for future generations.
Eligibility includes veterans who were honorably discharged and who would have graduated from high school between 1941 and 1955 but left school to serve in World War II or the Korean Conflict. Applications may also be submitted by family members on behalf of deceased veterans, ensuring that their legacy continues to be remembered and celebrated.
We encourage families, neighbors, churches, and veteran organizations to help us spread the word so that no eligible veteran is overlooked. Community partnerships are essential to making this recognition as inclusive and meaningful as possible.
Families interested in participating in the Newton County School District recognition ceremony are encouraged to contact the Newton County School District Central Office for assistance with the application process and ceremony details at (769)757-0060.
As superintendent, it is my sincere hope that this initiative serves as both a tribute and a bridge, connecting the courage of past generations with the promise of our students today. The Newton County School District remains committed to honoring service, celebrating community, and ensuring that the stories of our veterans are never forgotten.
Ms. Brooke Sibley
