The City of Newton Board of Aldermen held a brief special called meeting during their work session on Aug. 26 where the board approved rescinded the motions from Aug. 5 to use the services of Clyde Mann to replace air conditioner units for both the Depot and Police Department for a total of $20,500. The city will hold off on replacing the unit at the Depot until next year and purchase mini split units for the PD and have public works install them.
In other news from the meeting:
-Approved Sept. 1, Labor Day, a city holiday.
-Approved resetting the budget hearing day for Wednesday, Sept. 3, at 4 p.m. due to the need of the budget to be published for two weeks. The regularly called meeting will still take place on Sept. 2.
-Approved rescinding the motion to hire Officer Herbert Jernigan, which occurred on Aug. 19.
-Approved hiring Paris Griffin as a full-time certified officer at the rate of $18, effective Aug. 26.
