CITY OF NEWTON RENTAL
HOUSING CODE SUMMARY
The City of Newton has passed the City of Newton Rental Housing Code with the purpose of creating a database of rental housing units and short-term rentals within the municipality; establishing base standards and regulations for rental housing units and short-term rentals, promoting health and general welfare, and securing safety from fire, panic, and other dangers.
All owners, managers, agents and/or entities who have rental housing unit(s) and/or short-term rental(s) within the City of Newton are required to register their property(ies) before the property is rented. A permit fee of $25.00 per rental housing unit and a permit fee of $50.00 per short-term rental housing shall be due upon registration. An application for rental housing and short-term rental permits is issued by the City of Newton’s City Clerk Office. A separate application must be completed for each rental housing unit or short-term rental owned. Short-term rentals will be assessed utility sales tax on the monthly utility bill. A copy of registration from the State of Mississippi Department of Revenue is required upon issuance of permit for short-term rentals affiliated with third-party vendors. A list of base standards for rental housing units and short-term rental units can be found in the full ordinance. The City of Newton Rental Housing Code is effective December 7, 2023. A copy of the full City of Newton Rental Housing Code can be found at Newton City Hall at 203 E Church, via email at devans@ci.newton.ms.us, and via the City of Newton’s website: www.newtonms.org.
