The Hickory Reading Club began its 2024-25 club year with a meeting Sept. 12 in the fellowship hall of Hickory Baptist Church. Despite area power outages, hostesses Faye Anderson, Marcia Everett, and Sarah Jones improvised a soothing aqua setup with seasonal mini-mums and provided soups, sliders, and sweets.
Mary Ann Bond’s meditation focused on the wisdom of the omniscient God, which, according to Proverbs, can be attained by fearing Him and avoiding foolishness.
The evening’s program featured Lynn Scott’s PowerPoint review of Collateral Damage: The Mysterious Deaths of Marilyn Monroe and Dorothy Kilgallen, and the Ties That Bind Them to Robert Kennedy and the JFK Assassination (2021). Author Mark Shaw traces the domino effect from Robert Kennedy's actions in the early 1960s to three other "fallout" or "collateral damage" deaths. An attorney, legal analyst, and investigative reporter, Shaw offers perspectives on various people and events, including the Warren Commission, JFK, Dorothy Kilgallen, Mike Tyson, O.J. Simpson, and Kobe Bryant.
