The Hickory Reading Club met March 12th, in the fellowship hall of Hickory Baptist Church. Hostesses Sherry Riggle and Lynn Scott provided generous salads, sandwiches, soups, and desserts buffet, set in green and white St. Patrick's symbols decor.
Jackie Stamm's devotional, from the book "Jesus Calling", encouraged walking not by sight, but by faith, depending on God's empowering strength rather than being concerned about limited human energy to meet the challenges ahead.
Janice Morgan chose to discuss, as her program, Michael and Gina Spehn's book "The Color of Rain: How Two Families Found Faith, Hope and Love in the Midst of Tragedy" (2011). The Spehns, having each lost spouses to cancer, become through God's restoration a new resilient hopeful blended family with five children. The authors' sympathy and empathy lead to publishing this book which discusses the stepping stones of loss and healing, to establishing the non-profit New Day Foundation for Families which provides resources for children who have lost parents to cancer, and to working as inspirational speakers and talk radio hosts.
