As you may have heard, the Newton County Appeal is in the process of closing its Newton location and moving all operations to the main office in Union. As a matter of fact, we’re moving the last of our equipment out this week.
It’s a decision that didn’t come easily, but due to rising costs, it just came to the point that The Appeal had to cut costs by closing an office.
But do not fret, Newton, because this will not change our coverage of the county’s largest municipality. Our mission remains the same-to provide the highest quality local news coverage and the most effective advertising options for businesses in our area.
Importance of Local Newspapers
Last week, it was reported that Buckley Newspapers Incorporated announced the closure of three newspapers, including the Jasper County News and Smith County Reformer, attributed to mounting debt and a tough climate for rural newspapers.
While you never like to hear that a business is forced to close its doors, it’s especially disheartening to see that it’s a local newspaper.
Local Newspapers are a window to its communities that just cannot be replaced. And we at the Appeal: Timothy, Heather, Jason, and myself, are going to continue giving it our darndest to provide Newton County with the coverage that it deserves.
We thank all of our subscribers and advertisers for plugging along with us and look forward to continuing our service to all of you for years to come.
Citizens Forum in Newton
The City of Newton will hold their Citizen’s Forum on Thursday, July 18, beginning at 5:30. It will be moderated by City Attorney Brian Mayo. The topic of discussion will be public safety and how the community can work together.
Forums can be a great way to discuss and share ideas to make your city and communities a better place to live. But it’s important that these discussions are held in a respectful manner, by both the citizens and city officials.
After living in Newton for 12 years and getting to meet so many great people after starting this job, I can say that Newton is chock full of people who love their city and want the best for it. And every person at the Forum will be these same folks that want the best for their community.
Mr. Mayo will serve as a great moderator and here’s hoping that the forum becomes a step in the right direction in making Newton a better place, while steering away from becoming similar to a social media comment section that’s a huge negative and wins nobody over.
