It’s that time of year again.
Schools are back in session. Students, teachers, faculty and families are feeling the stresses that are unique to the school year.
Make sure you have your corrective lenses in or on, if you need them; drink plenty of coffee and eat a good breakfast. Kids, ask your parents to do the same.
You need to be alert for school buses and students. One may be making unexpected stops in the streets. The other will be picking up and dropping off students.
It is never, ever OK to pass a stopped school bus. It’s never worth a child’s health and safety — possibly life — for you to save a little time in your commute.
Ever wondered how you can help teachers and students? I’m glad you asked.
Caffeine, sugar and those annoying spinner thingys. Hand candy and sodas and toys to the kids as they walk onto campus or file off the bus. I can’t guarantee you’ll be popular with the teachers, and someone might call the police. Be prepared.
No, please don’t do that. Ask a teacher or administrator what supplies they need, and donate a few items. You don’t have to try to provide for the whole school. But if you are already wanting to help, that’s a viable option all school year long.
If you have students, ask their teachers how you can best get involved. Don’t be pushy or overbearing, but don’t be shy to ask, either. Even if they don’t need anything, they’ll be glad to know you’re willing to help if the need arises.
But the number one thing you can do for everyone is to pray for them. Pray for safety, alertness, cooperation and friendliness, wisdom and anything else you think is appropriate.
Several people in my family have been or are teachers. All of us have been or are students. And we know the power of prayer.
I’m no longer in school, but I still believe I can learn something today, if I keep my eyes and ears open and listen more than I speak.
Treat your neighbors right. Love God, then others.
And watch out for the kids — in every way possible.
