Barbara Warren, Activities Coordinator at River Birch Estate Assisted Living, reports that among the many activities at the River Birch Estate during the month of June was a 1950s party. Dressed in their ’50s attire the residents enjoyed Coke and root beer floats, along with banana splits. The party was kicked off with residents and visitors moving and dancing to Chubby Checkers’ “The Twist.” Added excitement was everyone getting their picture made with a 1957 Chevrolet Belaire in pristine condition. This car belongs to Ms. Rachel Leach, who resides at River Birch. This exquisite beauty was special-ordered by her husband, Paul Lumas Leach, in 1957 and delivered to the Chevrolet dealership in Meridian.
True love never dies, as seen in the faces of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Edwards, as they danced to a ’50’s love song, “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes.” Precious memories were brought back as the residents reminisced of what they were doing in the ’50’s.
River Birch Estate is the former home of Dr. Earl Laird, who practiced medicine in Union for many years. To see pictures of the ’50’s event, go to River Birch Facebook page.

I attended the Welch family reunion on Saturday at the Cheniere Lake Area 1 Lodge in West Monroe, La. I had not been in two years, and some who were there then were no longer with us this year. The younger generation is quickly producing replacements, who should be with us for many years. There was good food and fellowship and embarrassing pictures, especially the ones at the dinner table.
Keith Welch, Arlene Adams Welch and Robin Welch led an old-time gospel singing after lunch. I had to leave before bingo got started. It was good to see everyone and I look forward to next year, hoping my own children and grandchildren will be able to attend.
Before I left Union, I forwarded my home phone to my cell, to avoid missing any items for this week’s column. I had three voicemails show up on my cell phone, but they appeared to be misdials.
I apologize if I missed anything that needed to go in. If so, send it again and it will come through on my home phone.
