As July fourth approaches this Sunday, the residents of Newton County will have an opportunity to welcome the celebration of America’s Independence with a bombardment of fireworks and food.
The Independence Day Celebration at Turkey Creek will take place on Saturday, July 3, at 9 p.m. Gates will close at 8:30 p.m., so as to have everyone parked and ready for the show to start. The price for each vehicle is $10. Boats are welcomed on the water for an extra $10.70 for the boat launch.
Pam Engle, park manager at Turkey Creek, invites all to come early and enjoy activities and music before the show. “I invite everyone to come out around mid-afternoon. We will be playing music, painting faces and a balloon artist will be on hand. Also, the National Guard will have several games and activities set up for the kids. Unfortunately, our public beach will be closed, but there will be plenty of fun to be had.
The Decatur Volunteer Fire Department will once again be selling food beginning at 5 p.m. This year they’re offering hot dogs, pulled pork sandwiches, chips, drinks, Mr. Mike’s Yogurt, and regular or loaded nachos.
Each year, the attendance and sponsorship of the Independence Day Celebration has grown tremendously, which is something that leaves Engle thankful. “It just boggles my mind how everybody supports this,” Engle said. “Every year our list of sponsors grows. And last year’s attendance was affected by having to move the show to Labor Day due to heavy rainfall. But overall, each year we get more and more cars to the show. It’s all so overwhelming and for that we’re thankful.”
