The following is a listing of area schools that have decided to close on Thursday due to the threat of severe weather from Hurricane Francine.
-The Newton County School District announced that due to the anticipation of inclement weather in our area tonight and tomorrow, all Newton County Schools will be closed on Thursday, including all after-school activities scheduled for Thursday, September 12, 2024.
-The Newton Municipal School District announced that their offices and schools will be closed on Thursday, September 12, 2024.
-The Union Public School District announced that the district will be closed on Thursday, September 12, 2024, due to the threat of flooding and impassable roads. The volleyball game scheduled for Thursday against St. Andrews has also been canceled. Schools will reopen on Friday, September 13.
-Newton County Academy announced that they would be closed on Thursday, September 12, 2024, due to the threat of inclement weather. All school activities have also been canceled.
-The Scott County School District announced that Lake and Sebastopol schools and offices will be closed on Thursday, September 12, 2024, due to threat of severe weather from Hurricane Francine. An inspection of all campuses and offices will be conducted after the severe weather threat moves through the area. All schools and offices will resume their regular schedules on Friday, September 13, 2024.
-East Central Community College announced that due to the increasing threat from Hurricane Francine, the school will transition all classes to virtual learning and close all offices on Thursday, Sept. 12, 2024. Normal operations will resume on Friday, Sept. 13, at 8 a.m.
While the campus is closed, ECCC’s Mabry Cafeteria will remain open to serve lunch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and dinner from 4 to 6 p.m. on Thursday. Students living in residence halls who remain on campus are urged to stay cautious and monitor weather conditions when traveling to the cafeteria. The Grille in the Student Union Building will be closed for the day.
