The Newton Tigers finished their regular-season sweep of Division 5-2A and will now go for the tournament title this week.
Newton took two big wins this week as they beat Nanih Waiya 74-51 and Philadelphia 74-49.
The Lady Tigers took two big wins this week as well as they beat Nanih Waiya 47-32 and Philadelphia 46-36.
The Newton girls will open the Division 5-2A tournament at Philadelphia on Thursday at 7 p.m. as they take on Kemper County. A win on Thursday puts Newton in the championship game on Friday at 7 p.m. while a loss moves them to the consolation game at 4 p.m.
The Newton boys are the No. 1 seed in the 5-2A Tournament this week and will play the winner of Lake-Nanih Waiya Thursday at 5:30 p.m. The boys championship game is Friday at 8:30 p.m.
Newton boys 74, Nanih Waiya 51
The Tigers outscored the Warriors in every period as they pulled away in the middle two periods to take a 23-point win.
Newton led just 11-10 at the end of the first period but outscored Nanih Waiya 18-11 in the second to lead 29-21 at the half. The Tigers then outscored the Warriors 25-11 in the second and led 54-32 going to the fourth. The Tigers then took the fourth period 20-19 for the final margin.
Isaiah Johnson had his best game of the season with 24 points while Darrius Thames had 16 points. Kezarrian Wash, Melvin Smith and Rayvion Nettles each had six points apiece.
Newton girls 47, Nanih Waiya 32
The Lady Tigers used a big second period to build and early lead and held on to take a 15-point win over the Lady Tigers.
Zia Shields led Newton with 15 points while Erin Ware had seven points. Sasha Harris had six points while Janiah McDonald added five points.
Newton boys 74, Philadelphia 49
The Tigers scored the majority of their points in the middle two periods as they pulled away to take a 25-point win over the Tornadoes.
Tyreke Snow led a balanced scoring attack with 17 points while Rayvion Nettles had 15 points. Cahden Thompson and Isaiah Johnson each had nine points apiece while Tavion White had eight points and Kezarrian Wash added six points.
Newton girls 46, Philadelphia 36
The trailed early but used a big effort from Zia Shields to take a 10-point win over the Lady Tornadoes.
Philly led 15-12 at the end of the first period but Newton outscored the Lady Tornadoes 12-5 in the second to lead 24-20 at the half. Newton continued to extend its lead in the second half, outscoring Philly 10-6 in the third and 12-10 in the fourth.
Shields led Newton with 31 points while Marianna Thames had six points.
