All five teams in The Newton County Appeal’s coverage area won their first-round playoff games on Monday night and will advance to play second-round games on Friday.
Sebastopol had the easiest win with a 45-10 victory over South Delta while Lake hammered Pisgah 64-30. Newton County took a hard-fought 45-39 win over Lanier while Union beat Seminary 55-29.
The upset of the night belongs to the Newton Lady Tigers, who beat Puckett 58-48.
Newton 58, Puckett 48
The Lady Tigers went on the road on Monday and came away with a win over division 7-2A champion Puckett.
Puckett led for most of the first half as they outscored Newton 14-10 in the first and 18-14 in the second period to lead 32-24 at the half. But the Lady Tigers bounced back in the second half as they outscored the Lady Wolves 19-7 in the third as Newton took a 43-39 lead into the fourth period. Newton finished by outscoring Puckett 15-9 to take the win.
Zia Shields had a big night for the Lady Tigers with a season high 38 points. Erin Ware had 13 pants while Summer Jordan added seven points.
Newton will travel to rival Heidelberg on Friday.
Sebastopol 45, South Delta 10
The Lady Bobcats had little trouble in the first round of the Class 1A playoffs as they took a 35-point win over South Delta.
Sebastopol outscored South Delta 13-2 in the first period and 15-7 in the second to lead 28-9 at the half. Sebastopol continued to extend its lead in the second half, outscoring South Delta 10-0 in the third and 7-1 in the fourth.
Alana Gunn led Sebastopol with 18 points while Kylee Madden had nine points. Takayla Williams also chipped in six points.
Sebastopol will take on the winner of Richton and Mount Olive on Friday.
Lake 64, Pisgah 30
The Lady Hornets came off of their Division 5-2A championship with a blowout win over the Lady Dragons on Monday.
Lake started fast as they outscored Pisgah 21-7 in the first and 12-3 in the second to lead 33-10 at the half. Lake continued to extend its lead in the second half, outscoring Pisgah 17-11 in the third and 14-9 in the fourth.
Kalaiuna Jones had her best game of the season, leading the Lady Hornets with 21 points while Lyric Lay had 10 points. Emonti Earnest, Laneisha Palm and Tra’Shaylah Wilson each had five points apiece.
Lake will now host Loyd Star on Friday night in second-round action.
Newton County 45, Lanier 39
The Cougars built a first-half lead and held on to take a six-point win over the Lady Bulldogs to open the first round of the Class 4A playoffs.
Newton County outscored Lanier 14-10 in the first and 17-10 in the second to lead 31-20 at the half. Lanier then outscored County 14-9 in the third to cut the lead to 40-34 going to the fourth where each team scored five points apiece.
Remini Nickey led Newton County with 17 points while Hannah McDougle had 14 points. Shallase Jimmie had 12 points as she hit four 3-pointers.
Newton County will now host Greene County on Friday in the second round of the Class 4A playoffs.
Union girls 55, Seminary 29
The Lady Yellowjackets advanced to the second round of the Class 3A playoffs as they took a 26-point win over the Lady Bulldogs.
Union advances and will host West Marion on Friday at 7 p.m.
