An 18-wheeler traveling along Highway 15 in Decatur veered off the road Tuesday, Dec. 3, slamming into a tree just feet away from a residence.
The homeowner, who was asleep at the time, described being startled awake by a loud crash. “I thought it was a tree falling,” he said, noting his relief that his young son was at school. “If the trees weren’t there, it would have hit his room.”
A Decatur police officer on the scene reported that a witness saw the truck leave the road and strike the tree, which subsequently fell.
Crews from the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) worked to clear the tree from the roadway. According to MDOT officials, the truck driver was pulled from the wreckage with facial injuries.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation. The roadway has since been cleared of debris.
