Union Mayor Brad Capps has instructed Police Chief Billy Pat Walker not to administer tickets to 18-wheeler truck drivers using North Street.
North Street is off limits to truckers. They are required to use the Hwy. 492/Hwy. 15 Bypass intersection when coming into Union.
Capps contends that there is really not adequate signage to prevent drivers using a global positioning system from turning off of Hwy. 15 at the North Street intersection.
“The only signage there is after they have made the turn,” said Capps, “and then it’s too late. There’s no way for them to turn around once they make that turn.”
He said that he plans to put a large sign well ahead of the north end exit to alert drivers that they can not use it.
He said there was no restrictions on tractors without trailers from using the street.
“As long as they don’t have a trailer, we won’t bother them,” said Capps.
He said once the proper signs were installed, the fines would be reinstituted. The Aldermen voted to raise the fine from $200 to $250.
