Special Called Union Public School District Board of Education Meeting
The public is given notice that there will be a special called meeting of the Board of Education at the UPSD Central Office Complex on Thursday, March 30, at 6 p.m. Th purpose of said meeting is for the purchase of school bus and personnel.
Rural Medical & Science Scholars Program Applications Due April 1
High school Juniors, get a jump-start on college and explore a career in health or science!
The Rural Medical & Science Scholars Program will take place on June 10-29 at Mississippi State University.

2023 Loose Caboose Festival

Newton County School Board April Meeting
The Newton County School Board Meeting will be Thursday, April 6, at 8:30 a.m.
ECCC to Host Student Art Exhibit April 3-20
East Central Community College will host its annual Student Art Exhibition April 3-20 in the Vickers Fine Arts Center on the Decatur campus. An opening reception will be held from 1:30 to 3 p.m. on Thursday, April 6.
The exhibit will feature drawings, paintings, sculptures, and designs produced by EC students during the 2022-23 school year.
Local students whose work will be featured include Katie McElhenney and Hayley Morgan Loper, both of Decatur, and Jia Sanders of Newton.
Veterans Appreciation Day at the Decatur Legion Hut
A Veterans Appreciation Day will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 8 at the historic American Legion Hut in Decatur. The event will feature gospel and country music. All candidates are welcome to come and speak during the event. Barbecue plates will also be sold as a fundraiser for the Newton County Veterans Memorial Park. 2023 Newton County Heritage Festival
The 2023 Newton County Heritage Festival takes place Saturday, April 8, at the Newton County Alternative School located at 273 10th Avenue in Decatur.
The keynote speakers will be Joaquin and Stacey Looper of Blended & Winner.
There will be live performances by Mississippi’s own Southern Soul Artists Big Mel and Young Guy. There will also be live music by DJ Superman on the 1’s and 2’s.
Other events will be a 5K-run, walk, bike, a corn hole tournament, inflatable jumpers, a BBQ Cook Off competition, and special guests The Lady Steppas.
There will also be food, clothes, jewelry, candles, and a lot more.
Soil and Water Conversation District Annual Membership Banquet
Newton County Soil and Water Conservation District will be hosting its Annual Membership Banquet on April 25, 2023, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at ECCC cafeteria. This year’s guest speaker will be Mr. Mike McCormick, President of Mississippi Farm Bureau Federation.
If anyone plans to attend the banquet, please contract our office for a membership registration form. Forms need to be turned in by April 3, 2023. The Banquet ticket is considered to be the membership with NCSWCD.
