For several years, the Women’s Missionary Society of Mt. Zion Congregational Methodist Church has seized their calling to raise money for missions throughout the world. Year in and year out, they have secured funds for missionaries by way of such events as yards sales and cake sales. On Saturday, June 28, they will host a “Farmer’s Market for Missions” at Mt. Zion in an effort to further support missionaries and share of God’s word
This will the very first Farmer’s Market that the WMS of Mt. Zion have hosted and according to the organization’s president, Sherry Harrison, it’s just one of many ways they support missions
“Every year we have an annual auction on the first Saturday of November, where we sell food, then hold the auction. We usually have handcrafted items to auction, and it does really well,” said Harrison. “We also go in with the Highway 15 Yard Sale in October, and we’ll hold a raffles a couple of times a year or have bake sales, that kind of thing.”
Citing the importance of collecting funds for missions, Harrison said that everything they make goes directly toward the missions and the important work they do.
“Missionaries must have donations in order to stay in the field and do the mission work. They depend on us heavily throughout the year to send money,” she said. “We have a missionary family with children on the border of Texas and Mexico that we’ve helped purchase a security system at their home due to illegals that were walking across their land, we’ve got a couple of elderly missionaries in our church that we help with, we have a missionary in Belize that we support, and then we’ve adopted a family at Christmas and bought gifts for their kids. It’s just whatever we can do to help.”
Farmer’s Market and Bake Sale
The June 28 Farmer’s Market at Mt. Zion Congregational Methodist Church will take place from 7 – 11 a.m. in the church parking lot, located five miles south of Union on Highway 15. There will also be a bake sale that will include homemade pies, cakes, candy, and other goodies in the Family Life Building, located directly behind the church.
Items at the Farmer’s Market will include fresh produce and homemade jams and jellies. The Early Bird Coffee truck will be available for shoppers, as well.
If it rains that day, the Farmer’s Market will have to be cancelled, however the Bake Sale will still be available for shoppers to enjoy.
There’s still time to reserve a spot if you would like to take part in the Farmer’s Market. The cost to reserve a spot is $10. To reserve a spot or for more information, contact Sherry Harrison at 601-479-1368.
“We’re looking at this as not only a way to help our missionaries, but for the community to come out and congregate, enjoy each other’s company,” Harrison said. “Come out and take a chance to meet somebody new and have a time of fellowship.”
