Cordorius Ramone Earnest of Walnut Grove was arrested in the early hours of Sunday morning in the City of Union during a joint safety checkpoint conducted by Officer T. Stevens of the City of Union Police Department and members of the Newton County Sheriff’s Department.
During the checkpoint, Mr. Earnest’s vehicle was searched, resulting in the recovery of a misdemeanor amount of marijuana, assorted paraphernalia, a stolen firearm, and burglar’s tools. The firearm, reported stolen from Madison County in 2012, had been illegally modified. The collaboration between the City of Union Police Department and the Newton County Sheriff’s Department played a vital role in this successful operation.
Mr. Earnest was taken into custody and subsequently transported to the Newton County Jail by the Newton County Sheriff’s Department. He currently faces multiple charges, including Driving Under the Influence-Other Substances, Possession of a Stolen Firearm, Possession of Marijuana in a Motor Vehicle, and Possession of Paraphernalia. Additional charges are pending as the investigation continues.
The City of Union Police Department is deeply concerned about the discovery of this illegally modified firearm. Officer Stevens stated, “These [devices], which convert a normal handgun into a machine gun pistol, are not only highly illegal but also extremely dangerous. The possession and use of these devices pose a significant risk to public safety.”
The recovery of this illegally modified firearm highlights the ongoing efforts of both The City of Union Police Department and the Newton County Sheriff’s Department in maintaining community safety.
