A local government official was assaulted and a juvenile's gun confiscated following a chaotic scene on Cherry Street, where Newton Police and Fire Departments responded late Friday evening.
Alderwoman Temeka Drummond was found unresponsive by first responders at 202 Cherry Street in Newton, having been assaulted by strangulation and subsequently robbed, according to Newton Police Chief Randy Patrick. She received immediate medical attention and was later released from the hospital.
While Drummond was at the hospital, a large crowd of family, friends, supporters and residents from the neighborhood gathered at the scene. In an attempt to disperse the crowd, a juvenile fired a gunshot in the air. Newton Police Officer intervened, seizing the firearm. Chief Patrick confirmed that the juvenile will face charges, although specific details have not been disclosed.
No other injuries were reported in the incident, which remains under investigation by local authorities.
