The Newton County Cross Country team claimed the spotlight at this year’s State Games of Mississippi Pumpkin Run, earning a $200 Walmart gift card as the organization with the most participants. Held annually each October, the Pumpkin Run combines athleticism with festive fun, featuring costume contests and prizes.
Newton County’s cross country athletes, led by Head Coach Michael Franklin and Assistant Coach Richard Burton, plan to use the gift card to support their upcoming team banquet. "We are so appreciative of the gift card and will use it for our upcoming banquet," said Coach Franklin.
This year’s event attracted over 40 participants, with runners enjoying a crisp fall morning of competition. “We always anticipate the Pumpkin Run,” said Missye Dozier, Executive Director of the State Games. “It gives us the opportunity to hold a fall event and enjoy some Halloween fun.”
In addition to the team prize, McDonald’s sponsored a costume contest, providing gift cards for the winners. The event was made possible with sponsorships from Meridian Coca-Cola and SunSouth/John Deere, continuing the long-standing tradition of community support for the State Games of Mississippi.
The Pumpkin Run is one of two seasonal events held annually by the State Games, alongside Netfest in the spring. The organization is wrapping up its 33rd year, offering top-tier competition for amateur athletes across more than 40 sports. In 2023, the State Games drew around 5,000 athletes.
