A popular Decatur restaurant was destroyed by fire early Thursday morning.
According to Decatur Volunteer Fire Department Chief John Everett, his department received a call at 12:28 a.m. Thursday morning for a structure fire at the location of the South Decatur Mercantile, located at 102 County Club Road in Decatur. Once firefighters arrived, they discovered the building fully engulfed in flames.
“This building was built from scratch; they cut all the trees and dried all the lumber,” said Everette. “So, it was all hard pine and didn’t take long for it to become fully involved,” said Everett.
Fire departments from Newton, Hickory and Beulah Hubbard assisted in battling the blaze.
