What has caused hatred of the Jewish people throughout the centuries? Why is it on the rise now? This subject can be approached from two angles. One I found online is a history of how Jews have been considered and treated through the centuries. But another is to understand the spiritual reason an ethno-religious group making up less than one quarter of 1% of the world’s population is consistently targeted with anti-semitism, or hatred of Jews.
The religious reason, based on the teachings of the Bible, dates all the way back to the Garden of Eden, when Satan’s actions led Adam and Eve to disobey God. At that point, the Creator proclaimed His purpose for the future was to provide a Messiah, or Saviour, to save the world. (Gen. 3:15) This took thousands of years to accomplish, and it was only possible because God chose a group of people, descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (renamed Israel), to become the “vehicle” with which to bring that Saviour to earth to save the entire world. Of course, that salvation could only occur for people who gratefully believed and accepted God’s offer of the Saviour, Jesus Christ the Lord, who was born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, was crucified, buried, and was resurrected from the dead, finally ascending back to the throne of His Father, where He now intercedes for believers.
Throughout the centuries Satan has worked to thwart the will of God, killing prophets, enslaving Abraham’s descendants, killing male children at every opportunity by Pharaoh, Herod, and others, attempting to prevent the arrival of the promised Messiah. He thought he had won when the Jewish Jesus was crucified, not realizing that that was God’s plan all along, to have Christ take our punishment on the cross and conquer death by being resurrected from the dead.
Satan continued to persecute and kill Jews throughout the centuries, because they are God’s chosen people. Also, prophecies are still being fulfilled concerning the land God gave to Abraham and his descendants, such as when He began bringing the Jews, His chosen people, back to that land where it became a nation in a day, May 14, 1948. The enemy wants to hurt God’s reputation by causing those prophecies to fail. He has filled the hearts of many unbelievers the world over with scorn and hatred for the kinsmen of Jesus. The “pogroms,” violent acts against the Jews, the Holocaust of WWII, and more recently on October 7, 2023, when Hamas attacked Israel with a horrific massacre of about 1200 people on October 7, 2023, taking 251 hostages, are attacks against God when His people are attacked.
The apostle Paul in Rom. 3:1,2 said that to Jews “were committed the oracles of God,” in Rom. 9:3-5 stated the Israelites gave us “the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the service of God, and the promises; whose are the fathers, and of whom as concerning the flesh Christ came who is over all…” Rom. 11:25, 26 “...blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in, And so all Israel shall be saved.” This prophecy is presently being fulfilled, as there are reports of thousands of Jews currently converting to Christianity.
We must remember God promises to bless those who bless Israel made up of Jews and curse those who curse the Jews. (Gen. 12:3, Num. 24:9)
